Comparison of the effect of different types of organic matter on the production of coffee seedlings Coffea arabica L.
Main Article Content
Abstract
The study evaluated the effect of different types of organic matter on the production of coffee seedlings (Coffea arabica L.), Isla-6-14 variety, in the Tres Majaguas Cooperative Basic Production Unit, Santiago de Cuba. The objective was to determine the effectiveness of filter cake, cattle manure and decomposed remains of Erythrina poeppigiana on plant growth. A randomized block experimental design was used with three variants (filter cake, cattle manure and E. poeppigiana) and a control without additives. The variables evaluated included stem length and diameter, root length, leaf length and number of pairs of true leaves. The results showed that the application of decomposed E. poeppigiana (variant 3) obtained the best results in stem length (19.497 cm), stem diameter (4.000 mm) and root length (21.070 cm), significantly surpassing the control and other variants. In addition, the variants with organic matter reached 6.000 pairs of true leaves, compared to 5.200 of the control, and generated greater economic profits ($900 per treatment). It was concluded that the use of organic matter, especially E. poeppigiana, improves the growth of coffee seedlings and reduces costs, being a viable alternative for sustainable production.
