Morphological characterization of eight Coffea arabica genotypes in the Las Manuelas field
Main Article Content
Abstract
Coffee production in Cuba has decreased significantly, prompting the search for new genotypes adapted to local conditions. This study aimed to morphologically characterize eight Coffea arabica genotypes in the Las Manuelas field, Santiago de Cuba, to evaluate their adaptation and productive potential. Eight genotypes (INAF 17001-17007 and Isla 6-14 as a control) were established in a randomized block design with three replicates. The variables evaluated included stem diameter, plant height, crown diameter, branch length, number of branch pairs, internodes and secondary branches, measured at 6, 12 and 18 months. The results showed that the INAF 17001 genotype stood out in all variables, with a stem diameter of 2.40 cm, height of 100 cm, crown diameter of 76 cm and 11 internodes per branch. The INAF 17004 and INAF 17007 genotypes also showed good performance in several variables. It was concluded that INAF 17001 is the most promising for implementation in the area, followed by INAF 17002. This study provides valuable information for agro-productive diversification and genetic improvement of coffee in Cuba.
